Filipino Web developers who want greater control over search results of Internet search pioneer Yahoo! will soon have that chance with the launch of Searchmonkey in the Philippines.

Cris Concepcion, Yahoo! Philippines business operations manager, said Searchmonkey allows site owners to customize their Yahoo search result listings by adding modules or applications on search engine results. These applications include images, deep links, reviews and even video.

“We provide the publishers control over how the search engine results or abstracts look like. We feel that the best people who can present an abstract are the source of the abstracts, which are the publishers of the websites,” he said at the two-day Search Engine Marketing Conference 2008 in Makati City, which started Tuesday.

SearchMonkey applications can be presented through enhanced results and infobars.
Once activated, a user searching for a restaurant on Yahoo! can see the enhanced results that will contain a site URL, a photo of the restaurant, a short description, links to other articles inside the site and even a review. Infobars, which appear directly below results, can include links to other resources.

In the US, Searchmonkey provides a gallery of different modules for the developers including a LinkedIn module for pictures and friends, a Wikipedia module for short descriptions and an Amazon module for reviews.

Concepcion said allowing publishers to “monkey around” with Yahoo! abstracts results in a richer experience for the consumer.

“One caveat is that Searchmonkey will not affect your search rankings so if you’re on page four, you still have to work on your search engine optimization. But if you’re on page one, this is a really exciting development especially if you’re a small or medium sized business trying to attract customers on the Web,” he said.

He said Searchmonkey will be a free service that will be offered initially to Web developers of most-visited sites such as ABS-CBN or Inquirer. A public rollout of Searchmonkey is expected either in the last quarter of 2008 or the first quarter of 2009, he added.

Another service that will soon be made available to local websites is the Build Your Own Search Service or BOSS. Concepcion said BOSS provides publishers and businesses a way to use Yahoo! search infrastructure and customize it so it can be valuable to their customers. He said that instead of a standard Yahoo! toolbar, the search service will not be branded but will allow developers to build and launch web-scale search products that utilize the entire Yahoo! Search index.

Eric Hsu, Yahoo! Search Marketing Southeast Asia senior manager for business development, said advertisers experienced an 89 percent increase in sales when they used search and display marketing at the same time. He said advertisers who used display got a nine percent increase in offline purchases while those who used search only got a 42 percent increase in sales.

He said an online campaign by Kentucky Fried Chicken in Yahoo! resulted in offline sales of KFC chicken fillet burgers that were 20 times higher than the actual cost of the campaign.

Here are the methods that i got from the research I’ve conducted about website linking!!! I hope these would help you in terms of choosing the way of linking you’d like to engage on, but just bear in mind that it should be beneficial on your website.

Reciprocal linking

A mutual link between two objects, commonly between two websites to ensure mutual traffic. Example: David and Goliath have websites. If Goliath’s website links to David’s website, and David’s website links to Goliath’s website, the websites are reciprocally linked. Website owners often submit their sites to reciprocal link exchange directories, in order to achieve higher rankings in the search engines. Reciprocal linking between websites is an important part of the search engine optimization process because Google uses link popularity algorithms (defined as the number of links that led to a particular page and the anchor text of the link) to rank websites for relevancy.

Three way linking

Three way linking (siteX-> siteY -> siteZ -> siteX) is a special type of reciprocal linking. The attempt of this link building method is to create more “natural” links in the eyes of search engines. The value of links by three-way linking can then be better than normal reciprocal links, which are usually done between two domains.

Automated linking

In order to take advantage of the need for inbound links to rank well in the search engines, a number of automatic link exchange services have been launched. Members of these schemes will typically agree to have several links added to all their web pages in return for getting similar links back from other sites.

Link exchange

An alternative to the automated linking above is a link exchange forum, in which members will advertise the sites that they want to get links to, and will in turn offer reciprocal or three way links back to the sites that link to them. The links generated through such services are subject to editorial review.

One way link

Used among webmasters for link building methods. It is a hyperlink that points to a website without any reciprocal link; thus the link goes “one way” in direction. It is suspected by many industry consultants that this type of link would be considered more natural in the eyes of search engines. One Way links are also called Incoming Links or Inbound Links. An effective way to build this type of one way linking is by distributing articles through content sites and article directories. These articles generally contain an About The Author box that contains a one-way link back to the author’s URL. When publishers use these articles, those one-way links help authors increase their page rank.

Multi way linking

Technique used for website promotion whereby websites may create similar one way links that each involves 3 or more partner sites. This provides each website with a one way non-reciprocal link. This technique has evolved from reciprocal linking. According to Google and Yahoo, the latest search algorithms have evolved to hold less favor towards websites that contain a high percentage of reciprocated links, and a higher favor towards websites that maintain a high level of incoming non-reciprocated (one-way) links. The term multi way simply refers to the fact that the link exchange is between 3 or more websites, however each link is singular by only pointing to one other website. Other means of linking that may increase your web presence may also include other indirect methods such as loading images, videos, content or RSS feeds from a third partners website.

Web traffic is measured to see the popularity of web sites and individual pages or sections within a site. Web traffic can be analyzed by viewing the traffic statistics found in the web server log file, an automatically-generated list of all the pages served. Tracking applications external to the web site can record traffic by inserting a small piece of HTML code in every page of the web site. A hit is generated when any file is served. The page itself is considered a file, but images are also files, thus a page with 5 images could generate 6 hits (the 5 images and the page itself). A page view is generated when a visitor requests any page within the web site – a visitor will always generate at least one page view (the main page) but could generate many more. Web traffic is also sometimes measured by packet sniffing and thus gaining random samples of traffic data from which to extrapolate information about web traffic as a whole across total Internet usage.

When monitoring web traffic these are the following types of information are often collected

1. - The number of visitors
2. - The average number of page views per visitor – a high number would indicate that the average visitors go deep inside the site, possibly because they like it or find it useful. Conversely, it could indicate an inability to find desired information easily.
3. - Average visit duration – the total length of a user’s visit
4. - Average page duration – how long a page is viewed for
5. - Domain classes – all levels of the IP Addressing information required to deliver Webpages and content.
6. - Busy times – the most popular viewing time of the site would show when would be the best time to do promotional campaigns and when would be the most ideal to perform maintenance
7. - Most requested pages – the most popular pages
8. - Most requested entry pages – the entry page is the first page viewed by a visitor and shows which are the pages most attracting visitors
9. - Most requested exit pages – the most requested exit pages could help find bad pages, broken links or the exit pages may have a popular external link
10. - Top paths – a path is the sequence of pages viewed by visitors from entry to exit, with the top paths identifying the way most customers go through the site
11. - Referrers; The host can track the (apparent) source of the links and determine which sites are generating the most traffic for a particular page.
